Kenion Tournament Grades
*Weighted using a formula that combines number of plays, missed/executed assignments, and big plays. For 2-way players the first grade is your offensive score, the second is defensive. Notes are listed under gradeout.
Frampton - 85%
* Vast improvement in ball placement and decision making. Still needs to work on getting the ball out earlier on timing routes (fades, corner, outs, comebacks). Only had 1 turnover on the day. Threw some very good balls overall. Focus on misdirections and pump fakes to throw off the safeties. Stop waiting for WRs to get out of their breaks before you throw it, Work on putting air under ball and getting rid of it earlier on deep routes. Missed a few downfield field throws with too much power and not enough finesse. Command the huddle. Make sure guys know what they are supposed to do and if you see something wrong before the play correct it (motions, etc). Do the little things consistently. Know the bread and butter plays and who we are supposed to throw to as the first read. Pre-snap read and see the matchups. Continue to get better each week and most importantly lead the offense vocally.
Carpenter - 93%
* Injury hampered performance a bit, but still was able to do everything correctly. Made a big time catch on the F-wheel. Needs to get more involved in the offense.
Shook - 75%
* Too easy to cover. Does not give any creativity in releases or downfield. Sell routes and create separation with hesitations, head fakes, hand swipes. Needs to start making the "highlight" type catches. Work landmarks on corner routes. Stop lining up so far outside the hash pre-snap. Stop releasing so far outside and get skinny vs press. Great on slants, outs, and circle routes, but needs to get more involved in the intermediate and downfield game. Have to get to digs faster. Too many drops on the day for a guy with decent hands.
Aguilar - 74%
* Still getting caught on film not going full speed on some plays. Last play of the day vs, Elevate if had been going 100% and showed the true speed he has would've probably scored a TD. Get up field immediately after catches, too much dancing. Minimize mental errors. Needs to make sure he knows the concepts of each play so he can keep proper spacing and not take someone else's route away. Too many drops on the day. Getting better on comebacks and post-curls. Starting to use hands a lot more instead of being a body catcher. Work releases at the line vs press, attack the DB, don't just dance 3 feet away from them. Waiting for him to emerge as a downfield threat with his great speed. Continue to work on the little things and he will be fine.
Kobzeff - 88%
* Started to show signs of who he can be. Attacked balls at the highest point and used strong hands. Get out of breaks faster vs outs, stay low and roll. More creativity in route running. Work releases better and stay skinny vs press, don't widen to sideline, give yourself room to make the catch. Make sure to read play card before leaving huddle; had a few mental errors. Going way too deep on corner posts still. Had a great day overall catching the ball and making plays. Continue to work on the little things and separate yourself as the go-to guy. Still too soft, needs to develop an angry form of playing in these types of atmospheres.
Pigott - 70%
* Did not start off focused or consistent. Needs to work on catching and relaxing. Must develop the trust of the QB and coach to be a factor in the offense. Made a few great plays toward the end of the day and started to get into a zone. Must do the little things that we talk about in practice on every play (pivot). Sell corners better with hand swipes and head fakes vs tight coverage. Find a way to pull the ball down vs contest. As a smaller WR must really learn to use speed and quickness to create separation, tends to get thrown off routes when making contact.
Mertens - 88%
* Switched back to original position from last year and did fairly well. Focus was better this week. Still standing up too high, must get lower to break faster on short routes. Did a decent job of dropping into zones and watching QBs eyes. Needs to get more tipped balls and INTS. No inside releases in 0. Still not talking enough and letting teammates know what is going on. Liked the tenacity and pursuit to the ball. For sure got better this week.
Hunt - 83%
* Played a new position and struggled a bit, but began to improve as he got more comfortable. Remember, do your job and don't chase in base coverage otherwise you leave the middle exposed. Got to the ball fast when players made catches in front of him. Make more collisions on WRs crossing face. Keep eyes and feet active in coverage. Guard grass and don't vacate box. Will continue to work on drops and spying QB. Played with a sense of purpose and really got after guys in press. A great complement to Mertens as a field enforcer. Great to see him accept the challenge.
Arnold - 82%
* Got beat a lot on outs and digs. Must get hands on WRs to slow them down. Needs to use speed and play recognition to break on balls and get more turnovers. Understand concepts of 3x1 sets, 3x2, and 2x2 sets and what scenarios could occur. No inside release vs press. Needs to be more aggressive and more angry on the field. Stay in zone and guard grass. Communicate with corner and middle LB. Keep eyes and feet active, reading inside to out. Want to see him get more excited and have fun and not think so much and simply just play fast.
Rodriguez - 71%
* Not a good day overall for our cornerbacks. First play of the game vs TMP gave up a 40 yd go route vs base coverage which is unacceptable. Must find a way to stop WRs that are bigger and faster by using quickness and IQ. Work centerfield turns and communicate with safety/LBs for help over top and inside. Make plays when the ball is in the air, just don't look at it. Stay low and break faster to the ball and get tips. Close the gap and stop allowing so much space between you and the WR. Use body to force WRs to the sideline when they release outside.
Contreras - 70%
* Got picked on as I always say they will do at every tournament because of his size. Needs to become more physical and slow WRs down at the LOS. Must be ready to accept the challenge every time he lines up. Must learn how to recognize plays and bait the QB into making bad throws. Open up inside in base so you can see what is going on. Stop letting guys break cushion and run right past with getting any hand on them. Communicate with safety and LBs to let them know what is going on. Become a gnat.
Casaroli - 85%
* Came alive in the secondary making a number of plays in the end of the day. Starting to read the field well and recognize route combos. Made some very good breaks on balls, but still missed a few breakups that should've had. Don't be scared of contact. Win the 1v1 balls. Help corners on go routes and corners; communicate and know who has which coverage zone. Don't get caught with the short routes and let the top ones go. Always protect the deepest guy. In 0 make sure to read the QB and help the outside guys. Keep up the good work and study.
Bell - 80%(WR)/81%(S)
* Get out of breaks faster on outs; speed roll it without a stutter. Made some great plays downfield using speed and hands. Learn basic concepts, audibles, and play selection and will see much more time on offense. Minimize drops. On defense tends to get caught flat footed and allowing balls to be caught within vicinity by being one step too late. Continue to stay active in eyes and feet and will get there faster. Stop biting on 5-10 yard routes and stay back; if the LBs and CBs do their job you will be fine. Must help corners on deep routes and communicate with Dylan on double verticals/posts. Needs more pass breakups and INTs every tournament. More violent style of play when near WRs. Let them know you are there to compete.
- Overall I am proud of how you guys played those last two games. The first two I don't know if you guys wanted to be there. Many of you make bad mistakes because you go away from what you've been taught or just simply don't want to do it. Have you all noticed the only time I get on you is if it's for something I've already gone over with you hundreds of times? I expect you to be smart as athletes to take what I give you and use it! It's pointless if you don't apply it you know? All you have to do is your responsibility consistently and we are good. Trust each other and trust the plan we have in place and we will be successful. No knock on us at all but let's be real, we may not have the plethora of 3/4/5 star athletes like TMP or the Kenion, but the great thing about this game is that isn't everything. The game is decided by so much more. We can be a team of no offers/no prospects and still win with family, discipline, consistency, belief, and execution. You guys can't tell me we aren't 3-5 plays away every game from it being a W or a L. It's literally on us to get it done. You can't blow coverages, you can't drop balls, you can't miss a call, you can't beat yourselves.. you have to be elite to beat the elite teams. Stay together no matter what and don't let anybody push you around. No one fears us. No one respects us. What are you guys going to do to instill that fear within them? Study yourselves and work on those things individually so you can be effective next tournament. Enjoy the week off and let's get back to work. #AsONE
